This is all part of the learning. This is your “college of picking knowledge.” You buy books, read, and study. You pay tuition by buying and investing, and you have tests (by winning some and losing some).
ABRACADABRA … POOF! IT’S NOW WORTH FIFTY BUCKS
So, you’re getting good at spotting good stuff. You see it and swoop it up, but something really bugs you. How in the world do I price it?
Some people who specialize in certain areas have an exceptional eye for varied merchandise. They may even publish an interesting list or catalog. You also see other individuals who grab for the weirdest stuff.
You cannot believe they pass up your treasures and go for junk and are absolutely tickled to get it.
Both of these folks are making money. Both of them can spot a good deal. They may have clientele who wants these items. But how do they know how much to sell the stuff for? How much profit do they make? Why or how can anything have a price measure attached to it?
It comes down to experience, knowledge of the products, the market, hard work, and good notes. Sure, price guides may give some help or at least comparative relation to some sort of rarity valuation, but actual study of ads, lists, and catalogs is the best measure.
Keep track of prices on stuff you have an interest in or may have exposure to. Compare prices at stores, talk to collectors, save ads, and write down model numbers and prices. You are on your way to becoming an expert.
After awhile, this knowledge will go with you as you’re out picking. The stuff you find will be like cash in your hands. Good deals will be known. You’ll be a better trader and dealer.
